Providing any form of mutual aid is valuable, but mental health support is probably the most necessary – though any kind of practical support often doubles as a mental health boost. Support should be routine – not something that only kicks in when you discover somebody has suffered abuse.
Observing the Wellington scene a few years ago, there was little willingness to be accountable to any group, and little in the way of organisation that it was possible to be accountable to. Part of this was due to the sense that political groups were something you put work into and got very little back from – so people didn’t value groups very much. They didn’t see them as positive things in their life that they were happy to identify with and be accountable to, so much as a difficult, but possibly useful, task to be taken on.
There was no reason for anybody whose behaviour was challenged to remain in the scene – and thus engage in any justice or healing process. The scene was highly critical, unsupportive and stressful to be part of. Being in it was largely a burden. Removing yourself from it, or being ostracised by it, was often something of a relief.

Cheers

SamAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20836152.post-91652549229069329842011-10-03T21:16:06.049+13:002011-10-03T21:16:06.049+13:00Thanks Kim, and yes, still as relevant as when you...Thanks Kim, and yes, still as relevant as when you first wrote it.Jared Davidsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01328183560198975481noreply@blogger.com
